COurses Taught as INstructor
Modern Women Making Music MUSIC190S, Spring 2020
In this course, we recognize that women have been ignored in the discussion of the history of music, especially performers like Dolly Parton, Madonna, Beyoncé, and Janelle Monáe. Many women throughout history have played significant roles in the development of music, but their contributions have gone unnoticed. This course will explore the compositional and performance styles of women in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Although we will not cover the entire canon of women composers and performers throughout this period, this course aims to help students understand scholarly approaches to thinking about women and music. By closely listening to recordings and watching videos of composers and performers, this practice will allow us to understand how each of these musicians approaches performance, especially considering gender roles, sexuality, and cultural contexts. In addition to learning to use sound recordings and video for the course, the students will also listen to informative podcasts, read news articles, and submits papers to engage with current scholarly ideas.
Course funded by the Bass Instructional Fellowship Program
Introduction to Music Theory MUSIC161, Spring 2018 & Spring 2017
In this course, we will strive for fluency in fundamental musicianship, including both musical literacy and aural skills. Specific topics include key signatures; scales; intervals; rhythmic organization; meter and time signatures; and triads, seventh chords, and their inversions. Students will practice writing music criticism after attending two concerts—one organized by the Music Department and the other by Duke Performances. Finally, the students will end the course by submitting a final duet composition with either a live or recorded performance of the piece and analysis paper synthesizing what they have learned about diatonic music theory.
